Yucks..

Misti commented on the Durian post regarding "you cannot eat liulian during the day or before you go to work. or else burp habis!" , and this reminds me of this particular incidence again.. Hahhaha.. although the event took place 7 years back (in year 2000), I can still remember it clearly. Although I shared this 2 years back, it's worth sharing it back again, since Misti waited eagerly for the story (under the table summore!)

That night, i had a young Malay patient with suffered compound, comminuted fracture of the femur for surgery. He had MVA (motor vehicle accident) at 4:30 pm in the evening, and he took durian half an hour prior to accident. ( i normally will ask the patient when was their last meal and what they took, as stomach emptying under normal condition will take 6 hours. This is important to prevent aspiration of gastric contents into the lungs (hence aspiration pneumonitis) once patient was under general anaesthesia). I called the case around 10 pm at night (6 hours after his last meal). I intubated him with cuffed ETT with cricoid pressure applied, and he was put under general anaesthesia.

The surgery itself took approximately 4 hours and finished around 2 am in the early morning. I reversed the patient from all the anaesthetic drugs and inhalational agents. Upon awakening, the patient vomited out large amount of partially digested durian (almost one bowl), and stink the whole operation theatre. My assistant (GA nurse) couldn't stand the smell and vomited, hence leaving poor me handling the patient alone. The surgeon had left much earlier on (as usual). The circulating nurse was no where to be seen. The scrub nurse was busy cleaning the surgical instruments in the other room. The hospital attendant hadn't arrived yet despite being called earlier on. I had to clean up the "mess"- sucking the remaining durian debris from the mouth, wiping and cleaning his face etc. I really had to hold my breath while doing that. I had to make sure there was no more residual vomitus left inside the mouth and the patient was fully conscious prior to extubation. (Stomach emptying normally takes 4 to 6 hours but the process may be impaired by certain factors, such as major trauma/accidents which might cause gastric stasis. This was well proven in this case, as the food particles stay intact in the stomach even though 10 hours had passed since his last meal).

Luckily there were no other emergency cases following that and I can close the operating theatre. The partially digested durian really stunk, and the smell remained inside the fully air-conditioned operation theatre for several hours. I had encountered with several more disgusting episodes in the past, whereby patients vomited on my clothes, and to make the matter worse, I cannot leave and clean myself or change my clothes immediately coz I have to attend to the patient first, or else they might aspirate their own vomitus or fell down from the operating table. (Some will struggle in the merge of waking up), Some of the patients are aggressive and we have to be alert. Else, might kena pukul buta-buta anytime. Who says being a doctor is glamorous ???

It's the time of the year again. Durian LiuLian season... Liu for the Lians.

Finally I let him enjoy the satay. *Open Mouth*

Btw, I sakit tangan cos holding the heavy camera with one hand.. (The other hand holding the satay mah)

Photo Hunters : Colorful

photo hunters

Today's topic is Colorful.

Photo taken last year in one of the villages in Sichuan, China. One little gal using the home made mop (several pieces of colorful absorbent fabrics were tied up to form a mop) to mop the wet floor. An useful invention using the available resources. This somehow reminds me of the comfy handmade quilts (stitched by my mum) during my childhood time.

Have a COLORFUL & Fruitful Weekend

Iban Brinjal

Besides Bilin Jungle Fern, Buah Keranji, Buah Isau, Dabai, Tampoi, Rambai and not forgetting the cute & adorable Sago Worms, another local delicacy that shouldn't be missed out (which I love) when visiting The Land of The Hornbills is the Iban Brinjal (aka lakia kio).

Bright yellow/orange- coloured iban brinjal. Don't cha think it resembles persimmon from far?

The yellowish/orange fresh with countless seeds. The conjoint twin of brinjal & tomato?

It's sourish - 很美味 when cooked with chillies & sambal belachan - Appetizing and heavenly to those who fancy hot & spicy sour-ish dishes. The Iban Brinjal Assam Fish Soup is equally delish.
Yum yum yum.. 流口水了 (Salivating kaw kaw)

A Place Where Great Minds Converge...

One fine Saturday afternoon, 5 Great Minds namely Pink Cotton, Red Sponge, Goober, Ben & Chen decided to meet up & sot for 3 hours inside The Causeway Bay @ The Crowne Square Plaza, Kuching.

Intensive session of exchanging and sharing ideas... At times, Great Minds dun Think Alike..

Pink Cotton with her ice cream toast (very keng huh? ice cream also pink karer). Apa pasal tu toast manyak tebal?? o.O Gotta open mouth big-big to eat the toast. The eating-toast photo was *censored*..

The so called Thai-styled Fried Rice. Mmm... Tarak hot, tarak spicy, different from the authentic Thai-styled Fried Rice i had in the past. I can cook much better than this. And Pink Cotton's toast looks more delish pulak. Tak aci. Why other's food always tasted better?

Siapa punya jari tu? Btw, I will let Ah Ben habis sapu his lam pek-pek sizzling noodle maggie mee (in peace) before I started pinching him.

And the leftover koay teow.. Apa pasal so oily geh? So unhealthy.. Cabut fast-fast before Red Sponge piaks me with the leftover oily koay teow..

And not forgetting the so called "Group Photo" for the "kenot see light" gang - guess who is who? I presume everyone knows who is the one wearing the pink Kroc. Hahahaha... Too obvious liao :P

我回来了

Finally I reached Penang...
我回来了!!
Misti, I reached home "selamat dan berbunyi"
For those who catch no ball what is "selamat & berbunyi", it means "safe & sound" :P

Not that I went back straight to work after arrival (I'm not workaholic) , but I went there to collect my car, which I left in the staff car park as I went to the airport straight after work last Wednesday.

So sian cos have to start working soon liao... :(

p/s: Ah Boy waited for me in the airport leh!!! So touching.. And he has put on weight!! :P

The Grand Old Lady

Yeah, I had been to Canada, or more precisely Canada Hill. Hahhaha, not in Canada but in Miri, Sarawak ;) Why is it called Canada Hill? Might be there's a Canadian who stay there in the early days? Ask the expert (I'm not expert, so don't ask me..)

Presenting The Grand Old Lady, situated on top of Canada Hill. Don't be fooled by the name. The Grand Old Lady is not a nenek or ah mah or Poh Poh. It's not a woman nor human. It is none other than The First Oil Well in Malaysia.

Back to the early days, "Hari Ini Dalam Sejarah"... "The Grand Old Lady" represents the petroleum history of Miri and has been declared as a protected historical site by the Sarawak Government. The "Grand Old Lady" of Miri had been working hard & non stop for 62 years (no lunch break nor tea break nor toilet break.. Cham hoh?) , from 22 December 1910 till 31 October 1972. She produced a total of 660,000 barrels of oil.

Human statues of oil drillers are sculptured at the bottom of the well, depicting the old days when drilling was not aided by modern equipments.

Closer view of the "oil drillers" statues. Remembering those ancient days, whereby everything have to be done manually..

Next to the oil well is The Miri Petroleum Science Museum.

A bird's eye human's eye panoramic view of Miri City from atop Canada Hill

Too thirsty liao, that's why both of us can drink like camels & sapu 3 gigantic coconuts.

The "Fernleaf to-be" Fern

Plant with dual-coloured leaves. Red-red tei & Green-green tei..

And not forgetting the pathetic lonesome tree :(

Buah Keranji

Buah Keranji
Buah Keranji used to be one of my favourites. I used to savour the "fruit"for years when I was in Sarikei (since my childhood time). Buah Keranji is widely available in my hometown. I came across them once again (after so many years) when I visited the tamu market in Bintulu during my trip to Sarawak. (The same place where I saw the fat, juicy, squirmy & cute sago worms. How can I miss out the chance buying and tasting the nostalgic fruits once again?

Small in size (about the size of a thumb), which turned black when ripe.

The fruit is covered with thin, brittle skin. Thin layer of flesh with sweet, caramel-like flavour covering the large seed. Is this a local Sarawak/Borneo product? I dunno.. But I remembered a Malay pantun (up to date, I still haven't come across Buah Keranji outside Sarawak) :-
Sorong Papan Tarik Papan,
Buah Keranji Dalam Perahu,
Suruh Makan Dia Makan,
Suruh Mengaji Dia Tidak Mahu.

Happy Mother's Day

Mothers are wonderful creations of God. They sacrifice their time, their sleep, their pleasure, their energy, their food and in fact everything so that their offsprings can have the best. Mothers will shower their kids with love and bring them up with full wisdom. Who are we without our parents? We should treat everyday as Mother's day. We should show our appreciation towards our parents everyday instead of just on that"particular day".

Why I use safari seed photo for Mother's Day? Cos to me, my mum is a tough person, just like the safari seed. Although I can't join my brother and sister in celebrating Mother's Day together with my mum today, but I will go back home soon. Happy Mother's Day, mum. We all love you.

Happy Mother's Day to all the mothers out there
and
advanced greetings to all the "mum-to-be"

Photo Hunters : Five

photo hunters

Today's topic is F.I.V.E

5 stones (Batu Seremban)

What comes to my mind is the Five Stones game (aka Batu Seremban). The objective of the game is to throw one of the stones up at a time and sweeping another on the floor simultaneously (without touching the other remaining stones on the floor) followed by catching the stone that was threw up earlier on . This game continues to advance stages where the game gets complicated (sweeping increasing number of stones each time).

Five Stones is one of the local traditional games that I used to, and enjoyed playing together with my primary school classmates cum friends. We will gather in one corner for the games during recess time. Simple yet interesting. This game can be played anywhere, since we are using stones (can be 5, 7 or 9 stones) - which are widely available.

Now I feel like playing it again. Batu Seremban or Five Stones, anyone? ;)

88888 Mania

Haven't play with numbers for long time liao. The last time I played with numbers was during the 38,888th (in August 2006) and Sengkor was the proud winner. How time flies...

This time, who will be the lucky one? The 88,888th visitor, who will 發發發發發 or 发发发发发. Really prosperous kaw kaw liao. So 8. What is the reward? Dunno yet. Shall wait & see. Might be I will ask Ah Boy for his thoughtful dog-ful opinion. ;)

At the moment, the visitor counter has hit the figure 88,803. The visitor counter is located at the far bottom of the page. Please scroll down till the bottom of the page to see what's your lucky number. Who knows, you might be the lucky one? Please take a screenshot of the page if you are the one ;)

p/s: I know Winn will prefer to become the 383838th visitor instead. Sampat mah.. Kkkkk..

*Update*

The result is out. Misti is the lucky one. Congrats, Misti for being the 88,888th visitor :)

Baby Sharks (Pups)

*Count count* Five Finless Baby Sharks, aka Pups. Kesian... Kecik-kecik dah kena tangkap, dan semua sirip (fins) kena potong pulak. But, err... I saw 2 weird looking baby sharks with flat facies in that group of five, aka The Famous Five (not Enid's Blyton's "The Famous Five" - Timmy, George, Anne, Dick & Julian though).
The weird looking HammerHead Pups (thanks to Rinnah for the name) with flat facies. o.O at the position of the eyes... Geli lah.. Wonder what sort of vision this pup had...

Now, I feel like holding his eyes pulak.. Don't you think it resembles bikes throttles from this angle? Kkkkkkk... And, Mmmm... and somehow it also reminds me of snail, the siput babi :P

This "normal looking" but finless baby shark lagi keng.. Half way eating, dah kena tangkap liao.. Take note of the little fish inside his mouth. Poor fellow :(

Message of the Day :
Poor Baby Sharks/Pups.
Say No to Shark Fins...
