Ben, The Lion Prince

I almost forgotten that I have promised to draw one picture for Ben Siu, The Lion Prince (after he sang several sotongified Chinese & English songs for me, haha). How he gets this name? Read this post and you will know the answer :P Initially I planned to draw a portrait picture for him, but after thinking for a while, I changed my plan. Why? cos drawing a lion is much easier (well, drawing & shading a lion takes me less than 10 minutes.....) So I proceed with drawing a male lion with nice mane ;)

Ben's hair & The lion's mane... Looks similar, right? If he keeps beard, even better.. more similarity.. LOL. Seriously, Ben Siu.. Time to gunting rambut ... (I curi Ben's picture from his post :P)

Handwriting..

Butt & Day Dreamer insisted on wanting to see my handwriting, and they even say I might purposely write nicely to take pictures to show them. Aiyoh.... Well, this is how my handwriting looks like in my daily practice. So, is my handwriting legible? I know there are lotsa medical terminologies there (which is norm in medical practise)

童年 / Childhood

I was listening to this old song 童年(Childhood) by 刘文正 (Liu WenZheng) on my PDA (My PDA is my mp3 player too) earlier on. There was a flashback of my childhood days when I listened to the song..

I enjoyed climbing during my childhood time.. Climbing gates, climbing fences, hehhe.. and climbing trees? Nope, I'm definitely not a little monkey. And I remembered I had fell down many times from the staircase as well.. Rolling down like a ball. Luckily I didn't suffer from any head injuries :P Well, if this happen to the little child nowadays, the parents will definitely worried. But those were the days... Things were very much simple in the past, and we were free to play around without much restriction ;)

Another flashback that came to my mind was catching fishes and watching tadpoles in the drain or longkang nearby my house together with my childhood friends. Remembering the days of going "inside" the drain (which is less than 1 metre in height), and scoop the fishes out with the little filter. Yeah, I know it's dirty, but the activities were indeed fun and enjoyable. I really enjoyed my childhood..

Sotong Picture

Yesterday night, I had NBTD (nothing better to do), and I started drawing... sketching few pictures, including a sotong picture with my 2B pencil.. With my imagination, I drew a cool university graduated sotong (with Sotong degree) wearing big round sunglasses. You won't find this picture elsewhere cos I draw it out of my own imagination... Sorry, it's black & white picture with some degree of shading with 2B pencil (no 4B or 6B pencil though, I guess it's time to get one again?) and I don't have any colour pencil or crayon or oil pastel.

This "one & only" Sotong picture is specially dedicated to my dear Sotong sister ahmay. Hope she won't feel sotong today :)

Sotong / Cuttlefish

Let's continue with another Sotong Post after the initial Sotong Snack post. Recently there is a sotong craze, and one of the main culprit is none other than Sotong King.

This is the sinful Fried Sotong Eggs. Next to the sotong eggs, were the fish eggs :) High cholesterol stuff :P Aiks, Didn't come to my mind at that moment to break the eggs to see whether any little baby sotong hiding inside there or not..

The mouth watering delicacies, Sotong Kangkung aka Joo Hoo Eng Chai, served with sweetened spicy sauce with grounded peanuts sprinkled on top. Carcar.. Remember? I told u yesterday night I want to eat sotong. Tthis is what I had, Sotong Kangkung :)

Tau Sar Pneah aka Tambun Biscuit

One thing that I always noticed whenever I drive pass by Him Heang outlet (along Burmah Road) is there are lotsa outstation cars parked on the roadside of the outlet (cos lack of parking lot), especially cars from KL with the W number plates. I can see some of them even buy up to 8 to 10 boxes of Tau Sar Pneah. Wah.. spend almost RM100 on biscuits? Really so nice meh? Why the craze? Dunno lah.. might be cos I'm staying in Penang, so I won't craze for this tau sar pneah aka Tambun Biscuit so much, and I guess the same goes to most Penangites too. There are other biscuits available as well such as Beh Teh Saw, Phong Pneah and Hneah Pneah.

Him Heang & Ghee Hiang are the more famous outlet in Penang and of course there are several other outlets as well. Besides the non halal tau sar pneah (with lard), there are healthier version of tau sar pneah (vegetarian oil) as well as halal tau sar pneah (but from other company).

I prefer the Sheng Hiang tau sar pneah instead cos it comes in different flavour - original, spicy shrimp hay bee, cappucino, orange, pineapple, durian, green tea, yam, pandan, nutmeg, corn, mango, grape. My favourite is cappucino & spicy shrimp ;)

Taiping Zoo (11) : African Savanna

I almost forgotten to continue my Taiping Zoo series.... It's time to continue on with the local Animal Planet Series (which is Free Of Charge) :P

Giraffe. This is the only giraffe left in the zoo at the moment. When I looked back at the photos taken 2 years ago, there were 3 giraffes. (The flamingo mengacau only.. obstructing the view.. Must piak with sotong).

I guess the giraffe can sustain neck fracture easily since they have long necks :P At first I thought giraffes will have more cervical vertebraes then human beings since their necks are so long, but I was wrong. Giraffes have exactly the same number of cervical vertebraes as human. It is just that their cerival vertebraes are extremely elongated.

Long-horned ankole cattle. I love to look at the horns, which is one of the largest and most dramatic horns. There is only one ankole cattle left at the moment. I remember there were four previously..

Lizard Egg

I found this when clearing my stuffs few nights ago. What issit? Nope, that's not duck egg but lizard egg.

So cute.. small things are always cute (don't u think so?) Guess what came to my mind at that moment after I took the picture? I feel like breaking the mini egg to have a look at the mini egg yolk. Hahhaa, I was tempted to do so but I didn't.. cos I afraid I might see a semi-formed baby lizard instead :P

Brief summary of what I crap up there, especially for those who don't understand the rojak language :

Aiyoh, I'm frustrated. Pretty Angel asked me to write an essay. Don't want to write also cannot. Some more have to use all the 10 words above to compose the essay. So difficult. I feel bored & tired. Scratching my head now. No, my head is not itchy, just that my hand is itchy. Err.. How come my pen missing? Who steal my pen? Without pen how am I going to write essay? Who is that horrible person who wanted to sabotage me? Note to self : Ah Chen, like it or not, you also have to write the essay. Simply write also can lah.. At the moment my face is very black. Eat few banana to cool down myself. Kekkee, mission almost accomplish already, except I haven't use the intellectual word littoral yet :P

Dr, Mr and Ms

I guess not everyone is aware that the qualified Surgeons are being addressed as Mr (Mister) or Ms (Miss) instead of Dr (Doctor) in Malaysia & few other countries. And confusion do occur for those who are unaware...

There are several specialities or subspecialities under Surgery. The doctors in these categories normally hold the title of Mr or Ms. This include :
* General surgery
* Paediatric surgery
* Neurosurgery
* Cardiothoracic surgery
* Vascular surgery
* Oral and maxillofacial surgery
* Otorhinolayrngology or ENT surgery
* Plastic reconstructive surgery
* Orthopaedic and Traumatology surgery
* Urology etc.

I still remember telling my coursemates during university days that I don't want to become a surgeon in the future.. cos I don't want to study for so long to get the title Dr & then revert back to square one to the title of Miss again after I become surgeon. Hahhaa, actually that was not the main reason why I don't want to become surgeon. It is just that my main interest is not in Surgery.

I have performed several simple surgical procedures or surgeries in the past, such as appendicectomy, Caesarean Section, ERPOC & DD&C, excision of lumps and bumps (such as breast lumps or fibroadenoma, lipoma, ganglion, sebaceous cyst, dermoid cyst etc), circumcision, herniorapphy, orthopaedic surgeries (such as plating, K wiring, toes or limb amputation, finger refashioning, Incisional & Drainage, wound debridement, tendon repair etc etc).

This is an old picture (taken few years back) with yours truly doing surgery in the green ninja surgeon suit - surgical cap, surgical mask, surgical gown & sterile gloves. The picture was purposely blurred :P

Poor Babies..

Lately I have seen few small kids with cancer in the clinic. I feel sad to see patients with malignant cancer especially those in late stage or advanced stage with distant metastasis elsewhere, and it is even more heartbreaking seeing the little ones, especially the little babies down with the diseases. Leukaemia, lymphoma and brain tumour are few of the more common cancer in children. Others rare tumours in childhood are such as Wilm's tumour, Erwing sarcoma, neuroblastoma etc. (Generally, the incidence of cancer in children are low). But since I work in the tertiary or referral hospital, I will see more of these cases.

Recently, I have seen two little babies with Neuroblastoma (tumour of the sympathetic nervous system). The first one is a one month old baby (yeah, only 1 month old !!) and the second one is a 9 months old baby. The tumour in the second baby is Stage 4S whereby it has metastasize/spread to his brain and liver. The poor child is undergoing chemotherapy at the moment. Chemotherapy has lotsa side effects (during the treatment process and the side effect is temporary) and the side effects are intolerable even in many adults (different people will have different reaction) - with fatigue, lost of appetite, nausea and vomiting, diarrhoea, constipation, hair loss, mouth ulcer, anaemia, reduced resistance to infection etc. Imaging this small baby at such a young age have to undergo chemotherapy… :(

Cuttlefish (Sotong) Snack

We bought several different varieties of cuttlefish aka sotong snacks in Hatyai, and somehow I have forgotten about the snacks and it was left lying on the rack for quite sometime. Since I was shifting things these few days, I noticed the poor "forgotten" sotong lying & crying sadly on the rack :) Food are mean to be eaten... If we don't eat them, they will feel humiliated :P

Defibrillation or CPR?

One of the common scenes we see in medical tv drama series or medical movies are (especially Hong Kong drama series & movies) is when someone with cardiac arrest or asystole (whereby the heart stopped beating and the cardiac monitor shows a flat line ) being pushed into the Emergency unit, the medical doctor or health personnel will apply the defibrillator and start to defibrillate the patient (which is normally referred to as "giving shock").

After defibrillating (giving shocks) the patients few times and if their effort is fruitless, the patient is pronounced death. I am pretty mad and really hate it when I see such scenes. Cos this is pure nonsense !!! What an insult !! They think the defibrillator can work wonders? CPR is the keyword in such cases, not the defibrillator. The message conveyed is very misleading. For someone who had cardiac arrest or went into asystole, CPR should be performed immediately (CPR or Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation here means chest compression & rescue breath/intubation, and giving drugs such as adrenaline & atrophine) and definitely not defibrillation - which is used in Advanced Cardiac Life Support/ACLS in certain cases only!!!!! )

Electrical defibrillation should definitely not be applied indiscriminately to patients in asystole. This is not only fruitless, but also detrimental; eliminating any possibility of recovering a cardiac rhythm. Why so? It is because asystole following electrical defibrillation will worsen the outcome and produce a "stunned heart". Empiric shocks to asystole can inhibit the recovery of the natural pacemakers in the heart and completely eliminate any chance of recovery!

Most of the time, only the cardiac arrest with rhythms such as Ventricular Fibrillation (VF) and pulseless Ventricular Tachycardia (VT) are defibrillated. There are also other heart rhthyms that can be defibrillated or given synchronised cardioversion when the patient is not in cardiac arrest, such as supraventricular tachycardia (SVT) or fast Atrial Fibrillation (Fast AF).

Lunch @ Swatow Lane, Penang

There are countless hawker centers and hawker stalls everywhere in Penang. One can forget about dieting or watching the calories when you are in Penang :) We went to Swatow Lane for lunch after the church service. There are several hawker stalls located along both sides of the road in Swatow Lane.

The Fruity Ais Kacang with papaya, mango and banana slices. The choices or selection of fruit is up to individuals. Not many places in Penang serve ice kacang with fresh fruits. Very refreshing especially on hot weather days.

Tee Nya Kueh - a Nyonya dessert (chewy kueh served with gula melaka @ palm sugar syrup).

Oh Chean @ Fried Oysters Omelette (mixture of cornstarch, eggs & oyster) with crispy edges.

My Father

Today is Father's Day. Although my dad left us for 6 years plus already, he is always together with us in our heart... Throughout all these while before he left us, he cared for us and tried to provide the best for us. Both my parents have brought me up to who I am today. I am so glad and happy beyond words and blessed to have him as my father, and to my beloved mother as well. My dad was one of those olden days parents who didn't show his affections openly to us but we all knew he love us. And those people who know my dad will know that I'm his daughter cos I look like him .

Something that I regret was I never spend enough time with my parents since I entered university & later on in life as well after I started working... cos I was away from home most of the time..

Dad, although physically you are not together with us, but you will always remain in our hearts. We love you & we miss u. You are always my hero.

Thunderstorm ?

Wonder anyone of you enjoy this sort of weather? Nope.. not me.. I don't like when it rain ah mao ah kao kucing & anjing/cats & dogs especially when I'm out door on the street or when I'm driving on the road. If I'm at home, then that's different story :D

15th June 2006

What's so special about 15th June? Nope, it's not my birthday, but somehow, it's special to me - cos 15th June 2006 is a milestone, which marks my 9th year in service. 8 years ago, on this day, 15th June 1998 (Hari ini Dalam Sejarah), I reported duty together with my 2 other coursemates in university (One of them is now a Physician in Sarawak General Hospital and the other one works as General Practitioner, having her own clinic in the Land of Hornbills) to Sarawak General Hospital & started my career as a doctor with a prefix Dr in front of my name. It's a life changing experience. Medicine is a life long learning process. The learning process doesn't stop when a medical student graduates from medical faculty but it's just the beginning of another learning process.

So fast time flies... Today is my 9th year in service already... I'm getting more and more white or grey hairs day by day. What to do? Have to use lotsa brain cells at work and need to make very precise decision. How many lives have I saved over the past 8 years? Hundreds? Thousands? or.. ? I have no idea.. but I know it's definitely not a small figure. I might not be the best but I will try my very best. And I always believe in the saying Primum non nocere which means "First, Do No Harm". Hahaha, as a conclusion, Happy Working Anniversary.. (Just a word to console myself)

By the way, although I have worked as a doctor for 8 years, I'm still young ;) Hahha, cos I graduate early and start working at young age :P

Apom Balik / Ban Chang Kueh (慢煎糕)

After killing the disturbing roach, it's time to have some traditional treat (which comes with few different names) - Apom Balik or Apam Balik or Ban Chang Kueh/慢煎糕.. or whatever lah.. it all refer to the same thing :)

The act of my itchy hands.. Since I don't cut perform any surgery on human beings at the meantime, I might as well do a simple surgery on the apom balik :P Opening it up and see what is inside (just like doing a midline laparatomy on human).. Much to my disappointment.. there is no intestine, no stomach, no liver, no gallbladder, no kidneys, no pancreas, no spleen, no lungs bla bla etc etc.. What is available is just ... sweet corn, peanut, margarine, dash of coarse sugar etc... So sad :(

Cockroach / 蟑螂 (小强)

Still remember the cute frozen lizard picture I took not long ago? (frozen cos I accidentally freeze the poor lizard inside the freezer) Now I'm on the crazy move again.. I love taking photos (basically I will take a shot or two of anything that catch my interest) and up-to-date, I have taken more than 35,000 photos. This time, the star of the day was... Mr Roach (also known as cockroach aka 小强/Siu Keong.

Well, I dislikes cockroach. But since this Siu Keong disturbed me when I was shifting thing yesterday night.. So, sorrylah.. Siu Keong, u need to Rest In Peace liao..

Well, this Siu Kiong died in style with the 六脚朝天 posture .. Ada Gaya, ada sensasi... So, he can really R.I.P. with no regrets.

Dunno ah.. I always have this thought that the cockroach might fly around & land on my head. So, I have no mercy on them. See one kill one.. Hahha, although cockroaches only fly around during rainy days.. How about you?

"Eye to Eye" Talk

Few nights ago, I have an "Eye to Eye Talk" (not the Heart to Heart Talk nor "an eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth" thingy, ) with Ah Ben. What is this eye to eye talk? Well, I put my eye picture as the display picture in MSN/YM. When Ben siu saw the picture, his first response was "oh my gosh, scary momok eyes" Then he kaypoh & followed trend.. snapping a picture of his tired eye. His first response after seeing the picture he took himself pulak was "oh my gosh, so scary!"

He put the scary eye picture up replacing his earlier cute display picture .. My response after seeing his his sexy sleepy eye picture was... Guess what? "Faster remove that picture, hak sei ngor (I'm scared). Just like watching ghost movies !! " Hahhaha..

Something different - Cemetery

Today I will post on something different.. something that most people won't do or won't dare to do and I know this topic is a taboo to some :) I know lotsa people will say it's not good to take picture of cemetery or graveyards (in case u might capture "something" inside the photo). Well, this is up to individual, but not me ... No pantang-larang. Just do what you what you want to do as long as it is not against the law and, as long as you show respect to the deceased...

A weird looking tree in the graveyards. Is it possessed?

Skinny moo moo cow inside the cemetery. I think the grass here contain less nutrient?

I spotted few goats in the cemetery area as well.. The goats are more meaty.

One old graveyard... The carving on the tombstone was almost non visible. I can't read properly the words craved on the tombstone..

What is that in the picture? A monkey statue or ??

There are houses nearby the cemetery, or houses surrounded by the graveyards. Is that a healthy living environment? It's up to individual. I definitely won't buy a house facing the graveyard.
