2008

Two more days and 2008 is coming to an end. Too many things happened this year. My younger brother just get married recently in Kuching, Sarawak. I had done the Silk Road Tour and visited Western Australia. Not forgetting to mention I managed to meet back online with lotsa long lost classmates, schoolmates, coursemates, uni friends, ex colleagues via Facebook. I have also bought few lenses this year ~ Tamron SP AF 90mm f/2.8, Sigma 18-200 mm f/3.5-6.3 with OS and Canon 50 mm f/1.8. Get myself an 8Gb Ipod Touch too & I love it very much. However, just recently, my MacBook Mackie had a "heart transplant" due to hardware failure. :(

Two most heart breaking events that happened this year were I lost two dear close friends and colleagues, Dr Tan Bee Hooi and Dr Alison Lim Yee Hoon within few months this year. Their passing is really shockening but their presence will always remain in my heart. I'm truly glad knowing them and to have them as my friends. Their passing reminds me that I shall treasure and cherish what I have and and do not take things for granted nor procrastinate as life is short. And to those who loves to complaint about small matters in life, I want to tell u that "Just being alive is such a lovely and wonderful thing". Some unfortunate ones are denied of that priviledges. I miss both of you dearly, Bee Hooi and Yee Hoon. Although both of you are no longer here with me physically, your spirit will continue to live on...

Hopefully 2009 will be a better and more promising year...

Coconut Jelly

Yeah, Coconut Jelly. I'm not talking about Nata de Coco, but this....

I get to know about the Coconut Jelly (aka Manjung Jelly) from CK Lam's post few days back :)

Bought few coconut jelly back home since I love coconuts at the price of RM 3.70 per coconut (from the coconut shop in Dato Keramat Road, nearby the Patani Road Police Station). Instead of coconut water, u get the smooth and yummy coconut jelly. I'm lovin' it. :)

It's Durian World

It's liulian durian season again... not in Penang, but in Sarawak, the land of hornbills.

I have no idea what is the English name for this species of jungle durian, but so far i haven't see it in Peninsular yet. I haven't tasted it for almost 10 years already... This time I was lucky, since it's durian season :)

Yeah, the fresh is orange and the seed is dark brown in colour. There is another different variety (yellow in colour, and the fresh is more sticky and tasty, with thinner but sharper thorns but I didn't manage to find it in the market) :(

Next, back to the "normal" local durian.. Unlike those durian with names or grades from Balik Pulau, Penang.

The white flesh local durian, which is equally tasty. :)

Something Sweet & Juicy...

The Cameron Jagung which needs no further intro ~ so sweet and juicy that it can even be eaten raw. I need to re-emphasize it again ~it's SWEET and JUICY!! Satisfaction guaranteed. Something not to be missed out if I visit Cameron Highlands (but I don't think I will visit Cameron Highlands in the near future lah). And that also means.. if u happened to visit Cameron Highlands, don't forget to buy some back for me :P

Gooseberry

Lazy to post about the Fremantle Prison. Hence I will sidetrack with something else...

The first time I ate Gooseberry was in Beijing, China. And that was in 2002. I didn't know the name of the fruit at that time. Only a year or two back, I found out the name. Frankly speaking, I have no idea why it's called GOOSEBERRY. Which portion of it resembles a goose? :P

The gooseberries are also available here in Penang (import wan lah of coz). Saw it few times in the supermarket. Tastewise, it's sourish with tinge of sweetness. The sweeter version of tomato. I can imagine Misti's expression when eating it :)

Frozen Watermelon

This has nothing to do with the Hami Melon. It's purely coincidence that I posted this up after the Hami Melon post :P
Some of you might have noticed my status last weekend regarding I had frozen watermelon. The idea of eating the frozen watermelon originated from my hubby few weeks back since he ate that at his friend's place and he loved it. Last Saturday, I bought a watermelon from TESCO at a great deal of RM 1 per kilo and I freeze half the fruit overnight inside the freezer.
Presenting the frozen watermelon. I left the watermelon aside to defroze a bit as the watermelon flesh was kinda hard when took out from the freezer. Hahaha, it's similar as eating watermelon ice cream. ٩(●̮̮̃•̃)۶ ٩(●̮̮̃•̃)۶ ٩(●̮̮̃•̃)۶ I'm lovin' it :)

Dried Figs

I get to know about the so-called orgasmic mouth watering Fresh Figs from Albie but up to date, I still haven't get the chance to try it out.

So, the easiest solution is to indulge in the Dried Figs. Beggars cannot be choosy mah. Tiada oren, limau pun jadi lah :)

Mmmmm... and I still wanna taste the Fresh Figs. Angeles told me she sold saw the fresh figs inside TESCO woh in the past. HOW CAN? HOW COME I DIDN'T NOTICE IT??? I WANT !!!!!!!

p/s: Angeles also told me that Figs is known as Buah Tin in Malay language woh.. What? Buah Tin? What a name.. o.O

Dirty Bug

I saw a small yellow bug walking on my table yesterday night.. Hence, I quickly grab my Canon EOS 350D and put on the Tamron SP 90mm lens and took a snapshot.

Following that, I attached my Raynox DCR 250 super macro conversion lens for extra magnification (2.5x). When I look at the photo I took, I almost fainted... My Goodness. I didn't realise the bug was so DIRTY !!! (Btw, this bug is still ALIVE).

When I look at another photo taken using built-in flash, lagi pengsan. hahhahhaa... Ini kumbang manyak kotor lah. Might be he just visited the rubbish dump? He definitely needs a good bath :D

Liulian Ice Cream

The ever popular good old homemade Durian Ice Cream from Kek Seng Kopitiam..

The place is damn packed with humans homo sapiens during lunch hour. Since no empty seats nor tables available, so i had to tapao food back home.. Including the take away ice cream (RM2 leh ~ not cheap; but according to our "rich" Yenjai, that's not expensive). I post this up just to tease Mozzie and Angeles, the liulian lovers :)

Chickpea Mouse

Met up with Fibrate yesterday night and after our Longkang Laksa date, we went to New World Park for second round. We came across some creative handmade handicrafts and souvenirs. What caught our attention is the Chickpea Mouse or Kacang Putih Mouse. How not to fall in love with such chu bee stuff? Even the mini egg is cute too, with soy bean as egg and the green bean as egg yolk.

Blood Oranges

Guess What?? After all the huh hah regarding the Blood Oranges in LB's recent posts, I came across the bloody Blood Oranges today in Giant Supermarket.

Thanks to LB , else I might thought those are EXPENSIVE ROTTEN ORANGES (RM 1.99 per orange). LOL. After eating and taking few snapshots of the Blood Oranges I bought, it's time to sms and inform LB, my discovery. :P

The sampat LB took a snapshot of our sms-es and posted it to me :D

I choose two slightly "more normal looking" Blood Oranges, instead of those dark purplish oranges, and not those normal looking orange-coloured oranges (as you can see from the first photo). Kiasu and Kiasi spirit mah. LB's Blood Oranges are TAROCCO and mine's are MORO.

The seedless Blood Oranges with crimson, blood-coloured flesh and sap. Nope, I'm not sucking nor eating blood. I'm not dracula nor vampire either. I'm just me, and I am who I am. :P

Veggy Crisps

Introducing the Original Taste Mixed Vegetable Crisps (without artifical flavouring or preservatives).

Mixture of .. Potato slices, Carrot slices , Pumpkin slices and Long Beans. What's unique here is the crispy long beans. :D

This is the first time I eat the crispy and crunchy long beans leh.. :D

Assam Snack

This is another snack which I lup during school time.. The spicy sweet assam with tinge of sourness. Don't tell me you never tasted it before, as this assam snack is definitely more popular than the so called "King Kong snack.

Nope, nobody is pregnant here.. At least Ah Boy is not preggie (with reference to Angeles' "The Pregnant Man" post.. :P

?? Fruit

Anyone knows what is the name of this seasonal tropical fruit? Had it few times in the past but never get to know what is the actual name...

It's sourish with tinge of sweetness... I know, I know.. Some of you might name it as ~ The Ocipala Fruit :)

Addendum : Btw, this is NOT apricot nor plum...

Addendum : Thanks to Nyonya Pg and Josh for enlightening me with the name of this fruit, which is known as Buah Kundang in Malay Language and "Lam Na" in Hokkien dialect. The other name for Buah Kundang is Buah Sta' (pronounced as Buah Stak)

King Kong?

I wonder if any of you here ate this snack during your childhood or primary school time. This is one of my favourite snack in the past ~ The brandless "King Kong" mixed "cookies" or Biskut Campuran. Well, I don't have much selection during those days in the late 70's or early 80's. I felt so happy when I came across the snack again when I visited Kota Kinabalu in 2006, as I haven't see nor taste those food stuff for decades. Sort of reliving my childhood once again... :)

All these while, from childhood time up to these days, I still prefer the yellow cookies than the coconut cookies. It's just my personal preference :)

Addendum : From the comments I get, I come to the conclusion that there's a high possibility that this snack is only available in Sabah/Sarawak...

Peanut

I dunno why Peanut has so many different names ~ Ground Nut, Earth Nut, Goober etc and some even called it Monkey Nut. I know monkey loves peanut, but naming peanut as monkey nut? Huh?

And my latest favourite is the garlic-flavoured peanuts. Err.. No Flying Peanuts nor Yakking Peanut, as they are in the process of becoming peanut butter on vacation. And rest assured, Angeles, you can ditch away your neck turtle blouse. LOL

Leaf Insect

Winn asked me in the previous post (Grass Talk) where is the grass hopper. Mmmm... No grasshopper woh, but I have the photo of this leaf insect :)

Green-green tei. Looks like Grasshopper, but it's not grasshopper... In fact, it has the appearance of a green leave. I'll name it as dunno-what-name Leaf Insect.

Too bad this dunno-what-name leaf insect is not so bright (aka low IQ). It is staying happily on the grey concrete surface (instead on a green leave), exposing itself to predators. Luckily I don't eat insects, else sure habislah. As conclusion, this dunno-what-name leaf insect failed to get The Camouflage Degree. Gagal Exam :P

Grass Talk

One EFND afternoon when I was in Kuching, I took photos of grass in the Land of Hornbills. (On one of the rare occasion whereby it didn't rain. Well, it rained almost daily during my stay in Kuching during the CNY period).

Who cares what's the name.. I only know it's Grass. Let's call it Grass #1

So, the final conclusion is ~ Grass can be Beautiful... as long as they don't grow inside my garden. (macam lah i have a garden in real life) :P What say you? KFC and hopefully nobody here need to eat leaf medley eat grass. LOL

Playing with Worms...

I had two new pets and was busy playing with them yesterday night. The Sago Worms are so cute and so adorable (but of course Ah Boy is cuter lah).

Not only that, the worms are fat and juicy. May May, Please don't squish nor splat my cute worms. I dowan them to R.I.P. yet :P

Hahaha, can't resist but to take a backside shot of the Worm. Really EFND. And... please don't piak my sago worm's ka ch'ng ;)

side note : Nope, I didn't eat them. They are just too cute to be eaten. I love my sago worms :P
