Winter Solstice

I have totally forgotten that tomorrow is Winter Solstice @ Dong Zhi (冬至/过冬) till I visited Air Itam market this evening (for few bowls a bowl of pipping hot mouth watering delicious air itam longkang laksa) and saw several road side stalls selling the colourful GRB (glutinous rice ball) or tang yuen next to the market. Time really flies. It's the time of the year again...

I haven't made any fish ball tang yuen yet. Will only do so tomorrow (I still have half a packet of glutinous rice flour). The above glutinous rice ball or tang yuen photo was taken during my brother's wedding end of last month, and yeah, I made those tang yuen. ;)

In the olden days we would associate the eating of tang yuen or sii yian with the coming of Christmas. As kids we used to say that Zhong Guo Ren ate tang yuen and hong mou ren ate Christmas turkey/Christmas cake...and then asked what would it make us if we ate both?
In some years we only had tang yuen for both of festivals and carolling visits.

This year I am making tang yuen twice. Once for the Dong Zi and once for Christmas!
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year...

Merry Christmas to you doc!

I saw the cutest picture frame today. It reminded me of AhBoy as it was a pinscher holding up the frame. Really cute.

pete,
Air Itam longkang laksa is the best (my personal opinion lah, although others might differ) :)

I thought of eating the laksa again today.. But i guess there will be a huge crowd there since it's long weekend. :P

Merry Christmas & Happy New Year, Pete :)

kok,
I did made some tang yuen that day. Ate some at home & bring some over to father in law's house and had some there too :)

The tang yuen in the post was made during my brother's weddding. We use the red colouring, hence it's red :P

misti,
Wah, did u manage to eat any tang yuen at the end? There are several stalls selling tang yuen the day before the festival. I also see the ready made dough sold in the supermarket. Just had to made it into balls before cooking :)

Can, u can bring two big big bowls. Can made some for u if u r staying near by. Too bad Ah Boy cannot eat tang yuen. Sked he kena cekik by the tang yuen (if he didn't chew the tang yuen properly before swallowing) :)

Merry Christmas & Happy New Year to u too. Hopefully next year will be a better year for u, and your business will prosper, and u can get more free time & deserved rest.:)
