Fear of Needle?

Are you afraid of needle? I hope not. It's just a small "prick" and it won't really hurt. I just had my blood test and fasting lipid profile or cholesterol level (TC, Tg, LDL, HDL level) checked (after endless servings of sotong aka squids over the last couple of weeks besides crabs/prawns and other high cholesterol stuffs). Mmm.. My cholesterol level is still very well kept within normal limit despite all those high cholesterol stuff I took few weeks ago :) Have you checked your cholesterol level lately? If not, it's time to do so. Remember.. needle prick doesn't hurt. I'm not afraid of needle and I hope the same goes to you too :)

There are quite a number of people out there who are afraid or phobia of needles. Frankly speaking, I'm amused each time I see those well built macho and muscular guys closing their eyes or looking away or covering their faces with the other hand when being pricked with needle for blood taking purpose. The more extreme one, will shout like a kid. If they are little kids, then it is understandable. But these are adults !!

Aiyoh... blood taking is nothing major. Although some unlucky one might need to be pricked few times during the blood taking process cos of small, non visible or non palpable veins or blood vessels (Hahahaa, blood taking needs skill too), but the pain is so transient and only last for a brief duration. What to scare of? I know I know... different people have different pain threshold :P

Is it true that if the needle is changed after used to poke into the whatever tube to get the whatever fluid for injection, the new needle doesn't hurt as much because the previous one is already blunt? Gosh I think I need to rephrase my question.. sleepy.. can't think right. Hahhahaha

What a scary post! I do fear about any kind of needle, especially the syringe needle!

Anonymous said...

actually not scary & painful. but if you encounter situation whereby doctor or nurse who "poke" you several times in attempt to reach your artery, i guess you will have different point of view soon hahahahaha ...

ah nel said...

i hv a phobia on needles but when they poke it..nth ler...
when i removed my wisdomm tooth the doctor inject 3 needles on my gum...

Chen said...

mistipurple,
Bravo.. brave gal. Some people will feel dizzy or even fainted at the sight of blood :P
Yeah, very wasteful hoh? Spilling your precious blood on the floor :P

SA,
Those were the memorable days, huh? :) Almost all kids dislike doctors cos the fear of needles.

I hates taking blood or setting branula on little kids cos they struggle so much. At times we need 5 or 6 adults to hold the kid still. And summore the veins of the little ones especially the chubby kids are so delicate :P

may,
I have few colleagues who scared of being pricked as well :P Human nature, hoh?

U notice, u notice?
Hahaha.. My hand was itchy yesterday night and I changed my blog title :P

The artist,
Mmmm…. Don’t worry, most people share the same opinion as u :)

slurp,
Artery? Hah? u kena poked artery before for certain blood investigation, eg ABG ah? Or someone was admitted to ICU before? :P

Taking blood from vein and from artery is different. The latter (artery) is much much more painful :) But the needle we used for arterial blood sampling or inserting arterial branula for arterial line are much smaller then the needle we used for blood taking from veins.

And of course skills do count :) If get poked by inexperienced junior nurses or medical students or fresh unexperienced junior doctor or house officer or intern, then different story lah :P

ah nel,
That’s good :) Wanna volunteer for blood donation? Can save lives.

HAhahaha. Ok, I am more alert now. Here it goes..

My friend went to take her Hep B anitbody jab. During the first dose, the doc put on a new needle, inject into a bottle containing the antibody, then the doc took out the needle, installed a new one, then jab her.

But during the second dose, the doc used the same needle to poke into the bottle to obtain the antibody, then didn't change the needle and terus jab her.

Is it a must for the nurse/doc to change the needle after getting the antibody before injecting the patient?

Chen said...

lynxx,
The reason why they changed the needle is to maintain the sterility of the needle prior to injection. Cos the needle is considered as "contaminated" after being inserted to the bottle to withdraw the drug solutions.

It is better to change to a new needle for "sterility" purpose, but frankly speaking... not everyone practise that in real life :)

Redsponge said...

HAR???? mai mai mai...no need no need!

i will find it out one day...

Chen said...

red sponge,
Aiks.. u have no confident in Pink Cotton ah? Must give her face mah.. Let her cucuk your blood vessel :p

LX said...

Oh I see... so it's not much on the needle getting blunt but more of sterility. Thanks!
