Ice cream potong

The red beans and coconut milk (santan) ice cream potong.

This is one of the popular products from King's ~ the ais krim potong. Written there on the box Remembering The Good Old Days. I quote what is written there : In the good old days, children waited eagerly for the ice cream man to come on his bicycle, with delicious homemade "Potong" ice cream. At the sound of his bell, they would run and gather around the ice cream man. With beaming faces, the children watches the ice cream man prepare this unique ice cream, waiting for the ice cream to be ready for savouring. Ice cream had never tasted so good...

Does that sound familiar? The red beans and coconut milk ice cream is one of the delicious and popular traditional ice cream. Wonder how many of us have experienced those days? What is your favourite ice cream flavour?

Btw, I have no shares in King's ice cream :P

When I was kid in California my dad would make icemilk floats for us - chocolate icemilk in a tall glass with milk poured over it. As we ate it, milk would freeze in all the little pockets and cracks of the icemilk.

Other than that, I loved orange sherbet (which also made a good milk float).

What's up Doc, we never get to experience Ais Krim Potong because mom said "吃了會漏賽". Sunny Hill's the only Ice cream with mama Wong's seal of approval.

Definitely chocolate and peanut butter.

cooknengr,
Your mum is indeed different from the others.. ;) Sunny Hill Ice Cream. I remember seeing the shop ( or factory?) in Kuching.. Saw it on the way to my ex secondary school headmaster's house. He stays nearby the shop.

Never tasted the ice cream before :)

junebee,

Used to take ice cream potong.. even my mom made it when I was young. Because that is the most affordable ice cream. Nowadays I don't fancy it. I take those creamy stuff, like hagen daaz, new zealand ice cream, baskin robin, and more..

Potong ice cream was never considered healthy nor safe at one time because of cholera, esp during my younger days.

However, something which I really enjoyed was ice bags, where homemade syrup is filled into long tubular bags. I like the sour plum and the rose syrup. Wonder if they still make that??

cheng sim,
yam flavoured is nice too. I like yam and all yam related products, including the steamed baby yam :D.

yeah, things have changed a lot over the past one decade. It is fun to think or recall back those days, but I don't want to go through it again :D

maria,
Oh? This is the best brand? I have never tried ice cream potong of other brands. Yeap, there are lotsa different brands available in the market for ice cream potong :)

robin,
Oh, u are talking about another "nostalgic ice cream" during the old days - syrup filled in long plastic tubes with an assam or soey boi at one end of the tubes, and knotted at the other end. Used to like that ice cream a lot. This frozen ice cream only costed 10 or 20 cents per tube during my childhood days.

I saw the similar ice cream in Cameron Highland during my last trip to CH last year (strawberry syrup, sold at RM1 per ice cream). So far, I don't see it elsewhere..

carcar,
I think we have never tasted any sour nor bitter ice cream leh :P kekke..

I know, your cuppa tea is coffee.. so confusing.. mixture of the word "tea and coffee" in the same sentence --> later become "yin yon" drink pulak :D

I Scream? I'm not movie fan leh.. u are very creative, huh?
ice cream = I scream :P

zuhri,
I guess a number of us missed (u, robin, carcar, me etc.. ) the "nostalgic ice cream" of the old days - syrup filled in long plastic tubes with an assam at one end of the tubes, and knotted at the other end. The assam make the ice tubes so tasty. I missed that :)

I prefer Durian ice cream potong better.... Last time it cost only RM0.20 per piece.

CooknEngr's mum love him better ma..go to Sunny Hill Ice Cream which is the bestest affordable "home made" style ice cream...:)

kristopher,
Now everything goes up in price. Btw, now I start wondering how the "Sunny Hill Ice Cream" tasted like :)

Kristopher said...

Chen: Sunny Hill ice cream still taste like 10 years ago, no change...

Chen said...

kristopher,
I have never tasted "Sunny Hill Ice Cream" before :) So, I have no idea how it tasted like.. But I guess the taste is just like & no difference from the other ice cream?

Vagabonder said...

MMMh, indeed it looks a little bit different from the ones I bought in supermarket here, but I am sure it is much more delicious!
