Astro Decoder as MyKad Reader

In collaboration with MSC and MSCTrustgate, MyKad holders can now read the details of their identification card/IC - MyKad on Channel 800, Astro by inserting their MyKad (chip facing downwards) into the second slot of the Astro Decoder and follow the on-screen instructions.

The Astro decoder will display the following information:
• Name • NRIC No. • Address • Postcode • City • State • Religion • Race

I check my religion on the astro decoder.. bravo.. it comes out correct - Christian (I know there are quite a number of people who gets their religion printed wrongly on their MyKad). Great, don't have to waste $$$ to buy the MyKad Reader :)

Not only we can check the information on our MyKad, we can check our credit cards information too on Astro Decoder.. Mmmm...But too bad I can't read the balance of the credit card, Hahaha...

imho, if personal & credit card information can be read easily read off by some 3rd party devices, it's a real serious security threat.

some sort of authentication methods needs to be implemented to tighten the security. however, this is where it starts to get complicated.

slurp,
Don't worry..
The display is just on the basic informations :)

For our Mykad, the name, NRIC No, Address, Postcode, City, State is visible on the identity card itself, just that the religion is not displayed. Our main concern here is whether the displayed information was written correctly inside the computer chip or not. Cos to some of the Mykad holder - either their card can't be read or the displayed info is different from what is printed on the card, so if this is the case, then they have to report to the authorised party & redo the identity card again :)

Regarding the credit card, only the basic information was displayed - name, CC card no & expiry date :)

sorry, last night i was asleep when you pop out, i think twice. hehe...

i got my brother at home to check theirs immdiately on last night, but too bad, he said we dont have two slot, so how to put in our mykad?

why they are two diff type of decorder ya?

Chen said...

alicia,
as long as there are two slots in the astro decoder :)

carcar,
u mean.. your house's astro decoder only has one slot? Then too bad loh.. I dunno ah.. might be yours is the "older" model? My astro decoder is the one in the 1st photo. The upper slot is the 2nd slot. The lower slot is the 1st slot where I inserted the Astro card.

jonboy60,
u mean how to read the Mykad using the Astro decoder or ??

Select channel 800 on the astro decoder and wait for the screen like the one shown in the second picture to appear. Slot in the Mykad in the second slot with chip facing downwards. Choose the Mykad reader option & wait for the decoder to read the card. The information on the MyKad will be displayed shortly on the tv screen.
