Nian Gao/年糕 (Kuih Bakul)

年 糕 (Nian Gao or Kuih Bakul) is one of the must have food or auspicious food for Chinese during Chinese New Year. This sweet, sticky glutinous rice cake is made from steamed glutinous rice flour mixed together with water and brown sugar.

Eating 年糕 (Nian Gao) symbolises a sweet life ahead and family togetherness. There is a Chinese saying regarding " 吃年糕,步步高(升)", which means "advance step by step toward higher positions and prosperity."

There are several ways to eat Nian Gao:
- Steaming the Nian Gao until the cake becomes soft and eat it on its own;
- Coating the steamed Nian Gao with grated coconut and salt/sugar;
- Coating slices of semi hard Nian Gao in beaten egg + salt and fry it in pan.
- Sandwich a slice of kuih bakul between a slice of sweet potato and a slice of yam. Dip the "sandwich" in the coating mixture (Mix flour, beaten egg, salt and water together to a suitable consistency) and deep fry it.

*Which one is your favourite?

The simplest is the best. The one that freshly came out from a steamer. Yum Yum~~~

See bloggers back in M'sia all write about CNY's articles, making me Suan Liu Liu...

all the ways to eat nian gao i tried, hehe... and is equaly delicious!

and i heard my mum said b4, (those old times taboo) children cannot say bad word while the doing of nian gao is on, if not, it will not work! it means the nian gao will not turn sticky as expected.

Oh... I never heard of that taboo before..
but I heard the taboo regarding cooking chinese dumplings or zhongzhi/chang :)

c a r c a r said...

yeah, be back home tmrw night!

happy cum excited...

btw, what is the taboo u knew about zhongzi ne? pls share...

Chen said...

carcar,
nice :)
I'm taking leaves starting from Thursday :D

The taboo about zhongzhi? I wrote it down in my previous post during dragon boat festival. I copy and paste from what I had written earlier on.. :P

There is one old Chinese sayings that if visitors come to your house when u are boiling or cooking the "chang" or "zhong zhi" then 'part' of the chang, especially the 'corner' won't be properly cooked... I don't know how true is that.. but somehow, when visitors come, really, some of the corners of the chang is really uncooked.. funny... don't know whether is it just coincidence or ????? (Something which I don't understand..)

u heard of this befoer?

c a r c a r said...

em, nvr heard before, but i believe chinese taboo...they are just so 'un-explanable'...

thanks for sharing.

so, look foward for mooncake festival then, hahaha...

what my mom used to do with the kuih bakuls that our chinese neighbors gave us is to cut the kuih into slices and dip the slices in goreng pisang batter and then dip frying them. they are yummy right of the pan. kind of like an extra gooey dodol. i haven't been back for at least two decades now and i do miss eating fried kuih bakul. been looking on the net for the recipe. have not been lucky yet.
