Obesity in kids

Obesity is really a major concern nowadays, cos we are seeing more & more obese kids, some not only obese, but morbidly obese :( Obesity can leads to lotsa health problems & complications..

Lately, I have seen more & more obese kids in the hospital... And in fact it is increasing in number.. The most obese kids I have seen so far (until today) is the 9 year old boy with body weight of 106 kg !!! He is too morbidly obese till he can't breath properly with his own effort & needs ventilatory support. This boy really needs jaw wiring or gastric stapling leh..

And just few days ago only, I have another patient, 8 year old girl came with acute appendicitis for appendicectomy. She is 60 kg !! (More heavy than me :P). The amazing thing is that her mother is so small, tiny & thin.. When both of them were together, u can really see the contrast --> the "big difference". Her mother is underweight & I estimate her body weight to be something like 40 kg or less :O. Apparently the father has passed away already & she is the only daughter. So she is damn manja (from what I observed), & I think the mother feed her whatever she wants.. just my speculation.

Another obese kid that I see lately is a 10 year old boy with body weight of 80 kg !! and some more this boy has leukaemia... still can grow up to this huge size :O Actually, I have seen many more of these obese kids previously & I really lost count how many are there altogether...

not always the parents fault. Sometimes it's in the genes. I was a extra skinny kid.. but look at me now.. total opposite! :P

Anyway, I blame the food available and not really the parents. I mean, how much coke did we get to drink when we were younger? Or the fast foods? And chocolates, MAN.. when did u ever get to eat that much variety! :)

Yeap, parents or grandparents are usually the ones to be blamed, but most of the time, it's the grandparents fault... cos the grandparents are usually the one who spoil the child or manja the child very much....

And in certain cases, like what Izso mentioned, it is something inherited..
If obesity runs in the family, then too bad loh... Just have to look out what u eat & do regular exercise to keep fit :)

some people can become fat very fast & while some others regardless whatever amount of food they eat, also won't put on weight. --> This group of people have high metabolism rate :P
