Starfruit ( 楊桃 / Belimbing)

Another "fruity" post. Going Fruity is always better than Going Nuts ;)

Starfruits aka 楊桃 (in Chinese) or Belimbing (in Malay Language, not "Buah Bintang" though..). Nice, refreshing fruit to have especially if served cold together with a pinch of salt. That is my favourite way of eating this fruit.

Why is it called starfruit? Cos the starfruit has five-pointed star shape when cut in cross section. I can get these fruits at very cheap prices in my hometown (Sarikei) eg. few big fruits for just RM 1. I missed those days...

Selba is very lucky. She has a starfruit tree in her house compound. So, she can eat fresh starfruits all year long...

Yummy...great "refreshing pics". Perhaps you can plant a starfruit tree too, like your friend Selba? ;)

haha.. iced starfruit juice + pinch of salt --> refreshing drink, especially in hot weather ;)

the yongs,
I wish too .. but I'm not staying in landed property :) So, I don't have the luxury (no lands) to plant fruit trees :)

When you have your own plant and it keep having the fruit all year long then you will get tired to eat it... I eat starfruit very seldom, hehehe...

godknows,
Hehe, Glad u like the starting statement & the pictures :) I went to the market today & bought some fruits too, including mangoes and starfruits.

AFT,
There's the belief that one of the remedy for sorethroat is taking starfruit together with pinch of salt. How effective it is depends on how severe is the sorethroat. No guarantee though :)

carcar,
Yeah, some people don't like starfruit. Including my doggy.. He hates starfruit when he was still puppy time, but now he likes starfruit :) Last time he hates durian though.. but that was last time :)

There is no harm taking healthy food or fruits as supplement. There's the belief that starfruits will help to reduce the blood pressure. I guess something to do with the low sodium & high potassium content in the fruit?

selba,
made it into iced starfruit juice then. Add a pinch of salt :) Nice..

I like this too but seldom see them. Many years ago, we had a starfruit tree at our backyard (hometown). We kids always pluck it before it ripes and throw it at each other to play game. Duh!! age of innocent. *lol*

sharl612,
Haha, during my childhood days, we have lotsa fruit trees in our backyard - papaya trees, guava tree, ciku trees (this ciku tree never bear fruits...), soursop tree, buah nona/custard apple tree, mango tree, lime tree etc. The guava tree we had, the guava fruits were small with pink coloured sweet & juicy flesh, not the huge white coloured flesh guava. If we didn't pluck the fruits early, the birds will come and eat the fruits. It the fruits were over ripe, hehehe.. can see worms inside the fruits ;)

Are those ones sweet or sour, sometimes they are just horribly sour ;-)

thao,
the starfruit is quite juicy & sweet with tinge of sour taste :) When eaten cold together with pinch of salt, the taste is... heavenly :)
