MVA (Motor Vehicle Accidents)

There are quite a number of young reckless or drunkard drivers who speed and drift on the roads and drive/ride like there's no tomorrow - contributing to motor vehicle accidents(MVA) on the roads, increasing the number of morbidity and mortality. This is especially evident on late friday nights or saturday nights or festival eves.

These people, in my humble opinion.. if they met with accident ~ it's really what they deserved (or what we used to say as "padan muka" cos "they asked for it"). If they don't treasure their lives, what else do they expect?? They won't be lucky all the time. If they can be saved on the first time, No guarantee that they can be saved on the second or third time as well, cos all these depends on the severity of the injuries, especially if there is intracranial injury or head injury, then the prognosis is changed... Some people just never learnt their lessons.. till it is too late.

I have seen several young guy patients who are involved with motor vehicle accidents several times.. and suffering fractures at different sites each time. And in one of the case, this is the third time he involved in the accident. The first two times, he is lucky and survived, but he didn't learn the lesson. This time, he suffered severe head injuries with polytrauma with very poor outcome and graved prognosis. Even if he survived, he will forever remain in the vegetative state and this is a burden to his family members.

I really pity those innocent victims who involved in the accidents because of other drivers' reckless behaviour.. And I pity the family members of those who are reckless in driving or racing on the road in the middle of the night and injured themselves - with permanent disabilities or get into coma or vegetative states. The family members have to take care of them for their whole lives till the day they succumbed . I have see too many cases like this. And we, who work in medical professions, have to resuscitate these sort of people and rescue them (cos we treat everyone equally). If they learnt their lessons, it is alright.. It is definitely not easy to manage a polytrauma case.

What I want to say is drive safetly on the road. We are not lucky all the time. When you are driving on the road, please do show some consideration to the other road users as well. Treasure your life and think of your loved ones at home.

What's up Doc, I thnk the city should build a few race track with weekly races under controlled safety environment for the younster to release their tension. At the same time, these activities also, encourage young men and women who are interested in the mechanical aspect of vehicle, tunig, modifying....that's how we can have the next generation of engineers with creative minds.

eve,
Some people are just too stubborn & never learn :) Or.. by the time they realised, it is too late....

cooknengr,
that is a good suggestion but even though with the race track, I doubt those bikers will still continue on racing illegally. I frequently see bikers racing illegally (more than 100 of them altogether) in the middle of the night around 2 to 3 am (when I stay up late at night).

jonboy60,
yeah.. talking about recreational drug and similar substances :(

Selba,
Too bad, most of these people only thinks about the loved ones at home after they become disabled. Or they really need to learn their lessons the hard way (provided they are still alive) ?

foodcrazee,
Haha, the nurses who said that didn't really mean it :) Might be they said that just out of frustrations.. :)

I hope u didn't suffer any major injury besides the scarred face.

kristopher,
Wow, u so kesian.. the other party is wrong but yet u paid the compensation ? They bully u or threatened u to pay or u pay the medical fees out of sympathy ? :)

it's considered a suicide if the motorcylist ride recklessly on the road..

there are some who have the motto of "live to drive" or "live to ride" this sort of thing. so it's expected some may be overly passionate & confident on their driving skills. mishaps due to this are not uncommon.

peer pressure might be another cause.

drunk driving is a real serious issues. when one is high on alocohol, they can't even think properly, let alone think about themselves or their family.

building a race track to help release pressure is not a solution. racing is in fact a very stressful & expensive sports. handling cars driven to its limits requires additional training & discipline.

hmmm ... sorry, i can't help but think what the police are doing then?

yeah, i agree with u some people are overly passionate & confident with their driving skills. And some people just want to "show off". High price to pay...

What the police are doing?
*ahem*

ben,
wah.. your own definition of MVA :)
There's another abbreviation for accident, that is RTA or Road Traffic Accidents. MVA or RTA is the abbreviations we used all the time in medicine.

Hahah.. I like your description about the "kiasu" people.. Wanting to show off :P May I add in something? They "kiasu" but not "kiasi" :D hahhaa

They are probably too young ... think they cannot die. Like Leonardo in Titanic ... then look what happened to him? Hehe ...

kristopher,
hope that motorist will learn the lesson. Motorists here in Penang are King of the roads.. Have to watch out for them all the time when driving on the road.

loong,
yeah huh? Might be they think they have immortal bodies :)

Trying to recall what happened to Leonaldo in Titanic. Yeah.. R.I.P

Hahah.. tell u something, While everyone craze about Titanic, I'm not a Titanic fan. I only watched part of the movie.. cos it was too long.. ;) So I lost patience while watching :P But I know the ending lah..

Chen, u r very right! Motocyclists in Penang are the KINGS and QUEENS of the road! Left in, right out; overtaking each other like nobody's business. Reckless, i say. But when beating traffic jams during peak period, i must say this method comes in "handy"!! ;)

Chen said...

spinosum,
yeah loh.. they thought they are the king & queen of the road. Once I was on my way to hospital to work in the early morning. I was turning to the left & suddenly out of all sudden, there was this heroic (or should be stupid) Mat Rempit suddenly overtook me (he was on my left side & suddenly he accelerate his bike in front of my car to the right side when I was half way turning to the left to the hospital). And then when he reached the right side, he turned back to the left side of the road again. Damn. Luckily I manage to brake on time.. Or else...

He was really crazy. Showing off? Or he thought he had immortal body? Or he thought he was near the hospital , so he can ride his bike recklessly & if anything happen, he can be sent to the hospital fast????

This sort of people if want to commit suicide go further lah... If he kena knocked down later on, he deserved it !

Another king( or prince?) of the road in Penang is the trishaw rider :D

Penang has incredible bikers who weaved in & out of traffic like James Bond stuntmen.

Doc just FYI, we are probably the only two people in the whole wide cosmos that has not seen Titanic from start to finish. Personally I think the movie is overrated.

I guess that probably makes us special. I hope you sleep better at night with that knowledge. Haha~!

Chen said...

Daniel,
yeah loh.. these people better go & act as "stuntmen" in movies.. at least they can earn some pocket $$ from their dangerous act, instead of irritating other motorists :D

loong,
hahha.. I think I'm only the weird one who falls asleep while halfway watching Titanic :P Now I can find someone who didn't finish watching the movie as well.. Bingo :D

Hahaha, of course we are "special" - cos we are "different" from the others ;)
