Female Genital Mutilation (FGM)

Many knows about circumcision in male population, but guess not many have heard about female circumcision. I saw a case Female Genital Mutilation(FGM) in labour lately. FGM is practiced mainly in few countries like Africa & middle east etc..

She is a foreigner, from North Africa. The "female circumcision" practised there or FGM is a social custom, not a religious practice. In fact, this is the first time I see such a case after working for so many years... Her's is FGM type 3, involving excision of part or all of the external genitalia and stitching/narrowing of the vaginal opening (infibulation); - clitoridectomy , excision of the labia minora , & cutting of the labia majora which are then stitched together in order to form a cover over the vagina, with a small orifice left(which can only admit two fingers.. Difficult for her to undergo vaginal delivery cos there's a high possibility of severe perineal tear.. (well, have to cut off the fused part & restitch back again if going for vaginal delivery). She underwent Caesarean Section to deliver the baby..

scare to think of "how" they perform the operation ... mostly are done using the traditional unhygienic way.. some more in rural places, how hygienic can it be?
Dunno what instruments they use as well to perform this...

It is still practised in West Africa. I have lost 2 patients due to haemorrhagic shock after the procedure while I was in the Gambia. And these are cases ended up in hospital, god know how many we do not know of.

sian,
That's indeed very true.. The procedures done in the unhygienic matter & improper way will cos lotsa complications, to the extend of losing one's life.. Yeap, I agree with u that there'r many cases out there whereby we are unaware of..
