Photo Hunters : Five

Today's topic is F.I.V.E

5 stones (Batu Seremban)

What comes to my mind is the Five Stones game (aka Batu Seremban). The objective of the game is to throw one of the stones up at a time and sweeping another on the floor simultaneously (without touching the other remaining stones on the floor) followed by catching the stone that was threw up earlier on . This game continues to advance stages where the game gets complicated (sweeping increasing number of stones each time).

Five Stones is one of the local traditional games that I used to, and enjoyed playing together with my primary school classmates cum friends. We will gather in one corner for the games during recess time. Simple yet interesting. This game can be played anywhere, since we are using stones (can be 5, 7 or 9 stones) - which are widely available.

Now I feel like playing it again. Batu Seremban or Five Stones, anyone? ;)

  5. First time I heard of this game though somewhat similar to 'jack stone' we used to play as children in the Philippines. We don't use stones though, just 3d-star shaped figures made of plastic and a small ball we throw before sweeping the 'stones'. :)

u all so hardworking, made tiny little rice bags for the game pulak. I heard some people put in green beans or red beans for the game. We used the most basic one loh.. Tje easily available Stones ;)

    lynn,
    Sounds similar :)
Will the 3D star shaped figure hurts the hand when u grab it?

    drew,
    Thanks :)
I snapped the photo in the afternoon, sort of last minute preparation ;)

  12. day dreamer,

Next time I must pay attention to your hands liao..

Yeah, the stones can hurt the palm or fingers. That's why we always try to choose the stones with smooth surface for the game ;)

  13. Waahh... use stones to play ah? Painful leh... I also played this game with the lil' rice bags, but my hands were too small then when I had to sweep all five stones at one go! Kekekekeke!

  14. Isn't it easy in the last level? Grab all stone together is easier compare to get one only per time without touching other's stone. My grandma show me last time, I never play before.

  18. Great idea!! Another way for today's theme. Such fun to see how people come up with the theme!! I love strawberries. I just cannot understand those that don't like them!!! With your idea I thought about the bible story of David and Goliath of five smooth stones!! Another take on today's theme. Hope your weekend is great.

  20. never heard of this game but it sounds like fun!

  21. This reminded me of my early years in Mexico. Most of our games consisted of games and toys that we had to make ourselves, from old bronken broom sticks, to empty cans, the sky was the limit.

Yours sounds like an interesting game.

  22. rinnah,
we choose the stone with smooth surface loh, then can minimise the pain. Imaging grabbing the stone with rough & sharp surface.. :P

    u all so canggih wan..
use either beanie bags or rice bags. During my time & at my place, everyone played with stones. Never heard about the rice bags nor beanie bags :)

    vhanded,
Yeah, the last level is easier provided one has huge hand, else he/she can't grab everything. ;)

    woof meow,
Another canggih person who play with beanie bags/rice bags. During my time (in my hometown), everyone played with stones. Never heard about the rice bags nor beanie bags :)

  23. butt,
During those days in my hometown, everyone played with stones only woh. I never heard about the rice bags nor beanie bags during those days woh.

    letha,
Might be it's the same game with different name? I mean the game was named differently at different place :)

    Sandy,
Yeah, it's interesting to see how everyone comes up with different ideas.

I love strawberries, but the one available in Malaysia is sourish. The one I tasted in China is sweet.

Wow, I didn't think of the story of David and Goliath of five smooth stones. Interesting thought :)

  24. dragonheart,

    daniel,
and it's "challenging" too.. Thinking of how to pick up the certain number of stones without touching the others.

    tegdirb92,
Interested to try it out? ;)

    jose,
Yeah, we made our own toys in the past. I still remember the paper kites, paper balls, paper frogs etc etc. Hehhehe...

  27. And then there's another version, called the batu tujuh, where we used 7 stones instead, remember?
