Perahu Tambang

One can get to see lotsa perahu tambang (traditional boat) or teksi sungai (River Taxi or Cab) on the Sarawak River in Kuching Waterfront. Kuching is divided into two parts (Northern & Southern Kuching), by the Sarawak River. Nowadays, most of the government departments are located in the Northern Kuching Region. The fare to cross the Sarawak River with this perahu tambang is only RM 0.30 per person. It is more expensive at night time with the price of RM 1 per person.

These perahu tambangs are brightly painted with different colours ~ yellow, green and pink, with advertisement on the roof as well :)

These boats bring the passengers across the Sarawal River, and most of the time, they were busy. Most people cross from one side of the river to the other for work purposes/school or just for pleasure/fun (just like what I do !!). Lotsa tourists took these perahu tambang as well. It's a nice experience to cross the river with the perahu tambang for those who never experienced taking or sitting in boats before.

The photos above show passengers taking the perahu tambang. One has to step into the boat carefully or else might drop into the river if stepped wrongly. Hahaha... what I mean is, the boat is "parked" near the jetty, and there's no proper "steps"or "ways" to go into the boat as u can see from the picture :) U just have to be careful, and watch out your steps.

This is the view taken from the other side of the river (from the Northern Region). Yeah, I crossed the river as well ;) Can see the Square Tower and Watch Tower from this photo.

I can see lotsa fishing boats as well besides the perahu tambang.

Besides using the boats, there's other way to cross the river as well, which is by road~ The road is located at the other side of the town.

Fellow blogger Agustus wrote a post on perahu tambang not long ago on his blog as well :)
Just a side note
: I noticed Jellyfish commented there that he was so ulu (= katak di bawah tempurung) cos that's his first encounter with perahu tambang. So, Jellyfish, since this is your second encounter, so u are no longer ulu already :P

Kuching Waterfront

Kuching Waterfront is one of the popular tourist spot and attraction in Kuching. A long stretch, approximately 1 km, along the Sarawak River. Visitation to Kuching is not complete without a stroll at this place. I came here twice during my stay in Kuching this time. The photo above and the photo below are taken on different days.

There's River Cruise as well, for tourists as well as locals to cruise along the Sarawak River.

Lotsa food/drinks stalls and souveneir stalls available along the way on the esplanade.

The white building across the Sarawak River is the Astana.

There are few crocodile statue at the edge of the Kuching Waterfront, not the real crocs. But, there are indeed real crocodiles lurking around in the water/rivers in Sarawak. One of the famous one is "Bujang Senang"...

This brightly painted boat seen in the above photo is the perahu tambang or teksi sungai. I will write another post on these perahu tambang together with photos soon.

Tg Batu Beach

Went to one of the beaches in Bintulu on one of the Saturday evening. The sky was quite dark already on arrival to the scene. What a bad day. So unable to take nice scenery shots due to the dark weather. I just walked for a brief duration on the beach since it's going to rain soon. Windy day. Broke one of my sandals as well while walking. What a day...

The dark clouds and the waves... It's nice to stand on the beach at this moment. Enjoying the cool breeze..

While I was enjoying the dim scenery, I saw people (both adults and kids) started rushing and running back to the car. Mmmm... It's time for me to leave as well.. Looks like it's going to rain heavily very soon. And as expected, it started rainning within seconds after I reached my sister's car.

Kam Pua Noodle (干盘面)

Sarawakians, will know what is Kam Pua Noodle (干盘面). This is a popular and yet simple dish back home in Sarawak, especially in Sibu and Sarikei. I wrote a post on Sarikei few months ago, and included kam pua noodle inside there :) It's found in most of the coffee shop or hawker centre or food court in Sarawak, and available in almost every coffee shop in Sibu & Sarikei.

The kam pua noodle looks similar to wantan noodle in West Malaysia, but the taste is totally different :) There's two different version of kam pua noodle. One can opt for kam pua with or without soya sauce ~ I still prefer the kam pua noodle with soya sauce. The noodle is served together with few slices of char siew(pork) on top and a bowl of soup (normally it's just the plain ajinomoto soup :D ), and chilli sauce.

kam pua noodle with soya sauce
This is the kam pua noodle with soya sauce. I ate this in one of the food court in Kuching. Taste nice and up to standard, but the one available in my hometown (Sarikei) is even better :P

plain kam pua noodle

I tasted the above kam pua without soya sauce in another coffee shop in Bintulu. They didn't put the red colouring flavour to the char siew pork meat as well :)

So far, I have never see this dish outside Sarawak. Can only get to eat it when I go back home to Sarawak. This is one of the dish that I will not miss out when I balik kampung (go back home).

There will be more upcoming posts on popular food/dishes in Sarawak...

Journey to the West (西遊记)

It's indeed Journey to the West.. Cos I'm flying back from East Malaysia to West Malaysia :P 西遊记 or Journey to the West is one of the novel/comic I read during my primary school time :D Why I suddenly come to think of this title? Cos I saw the comic book in my nephew's room during my visitation to Bintulu last week :)

Of course I will not miss the chance of shooting few shots of cloud when I was inside the aeroplane... The clouds look so fluffy.. Reminds me of the cottonwool candy or candy floss aka 棉花糖 :D

The feeling of flying on top of the clouds is nice :P Since I can't walk on the cloud, well, at least I can fly on top of it :) Just like the feeling "on top of the world" Hahahhaa....

Finally, I'm back to Penang.. After leaving this island for almost 2 weeks, now I'm back. (Travel from one island ~ Borneo Island to another island ~ Penang island).

Greetings from Cat City

So fast, today is already Friday.. I'm now in Kuching (or Cat City ~ since kucing = cats in Malay language). It's raining most of the time over here, can't shoot nice pictures with cloudy weather. Can see lotsa cat statues over here and there's even a Cat Museum at the North Kuching region. I heard that they even put in the famous Cat cartoons character inside the Cat Museum, ie Garfield and Felix the Cat. I didn't visit this museum :)

The bad thing is now I'm having cough since few days ago and this morning, started to have slight fever. Think must be too much of running around over the past few days. Furthermore the weather here is hot, and my sister & mum are coughing as well over the past few days ~ transmission of gems :( Can't sleep well over the past 2 nights as well.. Will give myself a good rest at home today.. Pop in two tablets of PCM this morning and drinks gallens plenty of luke warm water.

Leaving Bintulu.

Time flies very fast, today is 22nd November already. Will be leaving Bintulu town in few hours time; flying to Kuching city. Taken lotsa photos over the past few days. Will upload the photos to my pc when I go back home to Penang. Get to try lotsa Sarawak local food and dishes which are not available in West Malaysia. Will update more on these together with photos later on. Having great time together with my family members and nephews.

The weather here is very hot. Sweat a lot. I even start sweating even after I step out from the bathroom.

One of my sandals was broken when I walked on the beach in Bintulu. The sky was quite dark at that evening. Managed to get back to the car before it started raining cats and dogs. I get myself a new pair of Lee slipper later on in the evening, and the broken sandals ended up in the trash bin :) Sayonara..

Bintulu, Sarawak

Finally back home already... I'm now in Bintulu. Reached Bintulu yesterday around 3:30 pm.

Have a nice nap during my flight from Penang to KLIA. Didn't realise it reached KLIA already till landing time.. Cos there's a sudden "jerk" during the landing ~ and this woke me up from my sleep :D Sleepy cos I was tired from my 24 hours on call the day and night before.. Reached KLIA at 9:55 am.

Waited for 3 and half hours in KLIA for my flight from KLIA to Bintulu. Strolling in KLIA, visiting few of the shops there... And bought some chocolates as well from th duty free shops :) Seeing the McDonald outlets in KLIA reminds me of events that occured way back in 1998; During my trip to KL to attend my convocation. At that time, KLIA was still new. Previously we were using the Subang airport. My friends (from same university but different course) sent me to airport in the early morning around 3:30 am to catch my flight back to Sarawak. I was working in Sarawak General Hospital at that time. This was the first time we went to KLIA as the place was just newly operated. We waited for a while till the McD opened (at 4 am in the early morning) and have some light breakfast there. So fast... 7 years passed already.

My flight from KLIA to Bintulu was at 1:30 pm. Didn't manage to sleep on the flight this time cos next to me was a group of "noisy" aunty and uncle.. They speak very loud in the flight most of the time. *Headache*... Reached Bintulu around 3:30 pm in the afternoon. My sister together with my nephews came to fetch me. It's nice meeting back my family members and all my nephews. Have a great time chatting with them :) Will update more later on, together with photos ..

Packing...

Finally finish packing my things.. Why I do my packing so early? since I'm leaving only on Wednesday (16/12/2005) Well... Cos I'm on call tomorrow(15/11/2005) and I have to stay in the hospital for 24 hours during my on call. And my flight is on the early morning on Wednesday. The only solution is to pack all my things ready. Won't bring much stuff, but I will definitely bring my digicam & extra SD memory cards :P (And most importantly, remember to bring the flight ticket)..

Will depart straight from the hospital to the airport on Wednesday morning after I handover the cases and on call pager to the person on call the next day :) Yeah.. it's indeed very rush, but what to do? There's only one direct flight from KL to Bintulu. I don't want to take so many flights to reach my final destination. (save time waiting for transit and save $$$ as well).

Motorbike

Riding motorbike is fun. Previously, I owned a Yamaha Sports 100 cc (I bought it during my Clinical Years in university, cos it's more convenient (for transportation purposes as we had ward teachings at irregular time and weird hours like 8:30 pm or even 9:30 pm at night) Why is it so? Cos our lecturers beside giving lectures, they have to see and treat patients in the clinics and hospitals as well, just like what the other doctors do. So, our ward teachings depends very much on their free time or their flexible time, normally only after they finish/complete their clinical works. If they are busy, then the ward teachings will be postponed to the later time or to another day, even at the very last minute. Sometimes we have to stay back late to observe or to assist certain procedures/operations or to conduct deliveries as well. I remember there were few times whereby we had to stay back till after 12 midnight in the hospital, and the latest one was till 5:00 am in the morning..

my beloved Yamaha Sports 100 cc

That particular incident was because we wanted to observe the ERPOC (evacuation removal of product of conceptions) done for abortions.. eg. incomplete abortion, missed abortion etc etc..
The Operating Theatre in GHKL was busy during the daytime; So most of the time, ERPOC will only be performed after office hour.. Initially these few procedures were scheduled to be done around 10 pm at night. So we stayed back and waited for the procedures. However, that day is not our day :( There are few emergency cases coming in, eg. acute appendicitis, leaking ectopic pregnancy etc. The more urgent cases had to be done first...

Only after complete doing all the real emergency cases/surgery, then only the O&G on call did the ERPOC. The time was already 3:30 am by then. There were few ERPOC done which ended around 5 am in the early morning. After getting all our procedure book (aka log book) signed, we changed our OT attires to our working attires and weared our clinical white coats. I got on my motorbike and rode to the medical faculty which is located opposite the hospital to get my helmet as I put my helmet inside my locker. On arrival to the faculty, much to my dismay, the gate was LOCKED! The guard was not around (sleeping else I presume?) I shouted for a while but there's no response. I was very cold at that time and shivering as well although I wear my clinical white coat on top of my working attire. (That's 5 something in the early morning).

I was thinking whether to go back to the ward and spent few hours over there while waiting for the gate to be opened or just rode back to my hostel without wearing my helmet. My friends who came by car had all left already by this time. Then I finally made up my mind ~ to go back to my hostel with my clinical white coat on without the helmet :D (I prayed that there's no traffic police on the road at that moment..). (Since I unbuckle the front button of my white coat, I think my white clinical coat was flying on the air when I rode my motorbike back home... Hahaha... Something like batman?) When I reached my room in the hostel, I dropped straight on my bed ~ ZZzzzzzz... Cannot tahan already :P

I really MISS my motorbike. Those were the days........ :P

Exam

I come across these while surfing online...

It takes 15 trees to produce the amount of paper that u use to write in 1 exam. Join us in promoting the noble cause of saving trees.

SAY NO TO EXAMS

The second one is related to some simple mathematic equations :)

study = no fail —— (1)
no study = fail —— (2)

(1)+(2)
study + no study = fail + no fail

factorise
study (1 + no) = fail (1 + no)

hence,
study= fail

So in conclusion, baik tidur (better go to sleep).

Hahhaa... those are really great jokes to cheer up those stressful people who are sitting for exam. (Exam are always stressful btw, and I hate exam as well, but it's something unavoidable). And, to those who are sitting for exams at the moment like Day Dreamer, Sban Boy and Cynthia etc.. All the best to u all and I pray for wisdom, peaceful mind and good health to all of you throughout these stressful period. Hope you all excel in your exam.

卫斯理 (Wisely)

I enjoy reading novels, especially Chinese novels; but not the romance or love story novels :P. I like authors like 倪匡(Ni Kuang) and Stephen King. During my childhood time, I enjoyed reading Enid Blyton's books :)

倪 匡 is well known for his interesting sci-fiction novels (科幻小说), which is simple, addictive and interesting. His writing is unique, different from other authors. Some of his well known novels series are like 卫斯理, 原振侠, 亚洲之鹰罗开, 年轻人, 木兰花 etc. Out of all these, I like 卫斯理系列小说 or "Wisely" the most :) I read most of the novels in this series already.. He has wrote more than 100 novels in the 卫斯理系列小说 .

some of my collection of 卫斯理系列小说

Why is his novels so interesting? Those who read the novels (卫斯理系列小说) before will surely agree with me. The novel is indeed very addictive. I will read the whole novel before I go to sleep at night time (during secondary school and university time). I won't close my eyes before I finish reading the last page. I can finish one novel within few hours :) I start reading his novels during Form 5 or Form 6 time. How I get to know this novel? Just through some random picking of the books from the Sarikei District Council Library :) After reading the first novel, I get hooked and addicted to it. Some of my favourites are such as <寻梦>,<尸变>,<木炭>,<病毒> etc.. His novels are interesting but the ending is always sort of "disappointing", cos the ending is always related to aliens or creatures from the other universe.

For 卫斯理 aka Wisely fans, u can download the chinese novels from this websites

I still prefer his earlier novels compared to the novels which he produced lately. I found the recent novels not as interesting as his earlier writing. (? run out of ideas) The novel is being made into movies as well as HK tv drama series. In the movie Wisely has being played by Chow Yun Fat in Seventh Curse (1986), Sam Hui in The Legend Of Wisely (1987), Chin Kar Lok in Bury Me High (1991), Waise Lee in The Cat (1992) and Andy Lau in The Wesley's Mysterious File (2002). The series has also being adapted into TV drama series, such as "The W Files" ~ currently broadcast at TV3 at 6:00 pm. I watched the series earlier on in Astro last year.

Who is this 卫 斯理 (Wisely)? He is an independent, intelligent and adventurous investigator/detective with martial arts skills. He is really an intelligent guy and full of wisdom; He can converse in several language and dialects.

U read the novel before? And what's your favourite novel(s) or who's your favourite author?

My nephew

Yesterday is my nephew's birthday. I called him yesterday afternoon and wished him Happy Birthday. This is his 11th birthday. (Well, I was on call yesterday. Have been doing few EOD (every other day) on calls this week. On call tomorrow as well). He is currently in Standard Four, but school holidays just started. So next year, he will be in Standard Five already. How time flies ....

There's something special after this nephew of mine. He is kinda different from other kids. First of all, he doesn't drink carbonated drinks ~ No cola, 7 up, pepsi, sprites, mirinda etc etc.. :) This is since small time already. He hates carbonated drinks... I still remember when we go for Chinese New Year visitations to friends and relatives house two years ago, he will request for non carbonated drinks like Chrysanthemum tea or soya bean drinks.. If these drinks are not available, he will opt for plain water (yes, plain water for a 8 year old kid !!!) :P Well, he does eat other snacks, junk food, sweets, jelly or keropok like other kids, but just that he hates carbonated drinks. I don't know why... :D

Another special thing about my nephew is he likes reading.. even from small time. Each time I ask him what he wants for his birthday present, he will only mention one thing ~ story book :) He will request the same thing from my sister(his mum) and my mum(his grandma) as well. Even at the age of 6 or 7 years old, he starts requesting for story book as birthday present instead of toys. This really give me a shock when I asked him for the first time. Cos I will expect he will mentioned something like car or robot or some sort of toys etc etc.. But instead, he requests for story books. He enjoys reading very much :) He does play around and enjoy outdoor activities like other kids but just that he loves reading. So, I bought few story books for him already.. It's sort of belated birthday gifts.

Seafood Porridge Steamboat

Just came back from dinner together with my dear colleagues. Some of my colleagues couldn't made it cos of other commitments. We had seafood porridge steamboat in Tianjin seafood porridge steamboat restaurant in Ayer Itam. We ordered the Family Set (cater for 7 ~ 8 people) at the price of RM 138+. There are 8 of us altogether. So, it's just nice. Thanks to the organiser, who is also my buddy ;) We really enjoyed the dinner and had a good time chit chatting.

The first time I get to know about porridge steamboat is from a posting I read from my friend's blog few days ago. Hahhaa..I didn't expect so fast I can taste it already :) In fact, I never know the availability of this porridge steamboat in Penang till a couple of hours ago :) All the credits to my buddy cum colleague who organised this :) For those who have never heard of porridge steamboat, the concept is the same as the other steamboat except they use watery porridge as base instead of the usual tomyam soup or chicken based soup.

Things included in the Family Set include pork, prawn, fish, crabs, chicken, liver, crabstick, fishball, porkball, fish cakes, chinese mushroom, button mushroom, abalone mushroom, century eggs, vegetables, peanuts, noodle etc etc ... (I also can't recall exactly what is available inside the "set", cos too busy eating and chatting).

This is indeed something different from the steamboat that we normally eat :)

Jellyfish

Why I come up with the idea of writing about Jellyfish? Cos I have one crappy cute KSL (契细佬) Kenneth with the nickname Jellyfish :P

IMHO, Jellyfish is a nice dish :P (What to do, everytime see the word jellyfish, made me think of food only)... especially when eating it together with vinegar, soya sauce & chillies or chilli sauce.

(courtesy from http://universe-review.ca)

Don't ever look down on Jellyfish ~ they have several uses. There's even a website on 1001 uses of jellyfish. Check it out ~ There's lotsa interesting facts out there. Jellyfish is indeed very valuable. I posted this piece of info somewhere online but never do so on my blog yet.

Some interesting facts that I gathered from the website 1001 uses of jellyfish:

(0129) Crisps. Dried cannonball jellyfish are a delicacy in Japan. They look and sound just like giant potato crisps.
Sounds very delicious. I want to try that.. Just wonder whether Fish Fish eat this before?

(0130) Dog biscuits (dried)
aiseh.. can feed my dog jellyfish as well :D

(0275) Organic breast implant with features for amazing sex life in aeroplanes. Expand and contract with changes in altitude.
walao... OMG

(0335) Psychiatrist. Convey all your problems to the patient jellyfish. Its inherent calmness will provide you with an atmosphere in which answers will erupt like ink from a squid.
This is interesting.....

(0574) Shower cap.
Hah??? Can't imagine putting a jellyfish on my head :P

(0777) Pet jellyfish. (Easy to feed, don't disturb neighbours, don't make noise etc.)
what a great idea :)

(0964) Use it as a nickname (some people do this voluntarily you know!).
I like this.... hahhaaha... how true. There is one living example over here -> Jellyfish

(0965) Excuse for avoiding unpleasant date (gotta wash my jellyfish).
Hahaha.. Like that also can?

(0278) Cheap brain substitute (pink and wet).
what the heck is this ???

Some fact that concern most of us expecially divers, are Jellyfish stings !! There are some useful fishing tips here ~ Fishing First Aid - Jellyfish Stings. Hope everyone will follow the comments stated there, especially this one:
Question: Does urinating on jellyfish stings help?
No.... this common folk remedy does nothing. Worst still, it can fire undischarged stinging cells and make the sting worse. So, remember this :)
And, in summary of what is written there regarding Jellyfish stings :
1. Prevention is Better Than Cure
2. Get out of the water.
3. Pour vinegar over the area to prevent the nematocysts firing
4. Remove all tentacles using sand, cloth, seaweed, mechanical device or glove(if available) etc
5. Wash the area with salt water
6. Put Ice (In a cloth of Plastic Bag) over the sting to relieve pain
7. Seek Medical Attention

Sepet

I watched the locally produced movie "Sepet" (a truly 100% Malaysian film) on the first night of Hari Raya Aidilfiltri (aired on the tube on Astro @ Channel 4, TV Ria).

I will say I hardly watch Malay movie cos of the "quality", but this one is different ~ this is one of the Greatest Malaysian Movie :) This film won few prizes, including the Best Asian Film Award at the 18th Tokyo International Film Festival 2005, the best ASEAN feature film awards at the Ninth Malaysian Video Awards 2004, the 27th Creteil International Women Directors Festival in France 2005, the best film in the 18th Malaysian Film Festival 2005, the Global Chinese Golden Arts Awards, and the Anugerah Era 2005.

The storyline is simple, and yet a very touching story ~ a classic love story between two young lovers, a Chinese VCD seller (Ah Loong aka Jason) and a Malay girl (Orked), both from totally different backgrounds ~ fell in love, and how they cope with family and society pressure.

The actor and actress are excellent and they speak a variety of languages and dialects. Malaysian English, Malay, Cantonese and Hokkien are used swiftly without any oddity. The 'rojak' (mixture) dialogue used in the script made them so real. That's how we, Malaysians, talk in real life. This film is simple and natural and not dressed up in some Hollywood fakeness. Normal cheap T shirt, plain baju kurung and even sarung. That's how Yasmin Ahmad(director cum script writer for sepet)directed this movie. She made the movie exactly like the life of an ordinary Malaysian, together with the ups and downs that come with it. It also emphasizes on the relationships of people of different races in Malaysia ~ something real and familiar to each and everyone of us.

A Malaysian movie that is really WORTH watching :)

Hari Raya Aidilfiltri

Didn't manage to visit any Ramadhan bazaar this year cos either I'm busy with work and at the evening that I'm free, it rained... I'm lazy to go to the market if it rained.. Slight drizzling is still alright, but if heavy rain, then, no point going. Now, it's the raining season again (monsoon), and most of the time, it rained, especially in the late evening and night time.

Went to one of my colleague's open house for Hari Raya Aidilfiltri this afternoon. So at least I can still manage to eat some of the Hari Raya goodies :P Enjoyed myself very much with the delicious and yummy food servings such as nasi hujan panas, Curry Chicken, Daging masak kicap, Rendang, Lemang, Ketupat with the delicious kuah kacang etc... There's lotsa cookies, cakes, keropok, kerepek, muruku and other tit bits as well. Delicious.

Now after eating, I feel so sleepy :)

(I'm off this today, so manage to do visitation.. :P I was on call last Tuesday, on Deepavali Day and it's such a busy day.. So many critical and unstable ill patients..).

Wishing all my Muslim friends
Selamat Hari Raya Aidilfiltri.
Maaf Zahir Batin.

Happy Birthday, Darren

Today is Darren's (My "little sister" 契妹 Wynnie's sweetheart) 21st Birthday.

My Doggy

I have a very cute Miniature Pinscher toy dog, with the nick name "ah boy" :) He is very energetic and looks like a mini Doberman. He always seems to be observing and thinking . I will say he is very clever, "busybody" and "cunning" at times too. :D

He likes to eat, and basically he eats everything, including vegetable such as carrot, bean curd, bean sprout, cabbage etc etc; Just like what we call "hampalang sapu" :) He knows how to "beg" for food..

My dog is so used to taking photos already. He can even pose for photo shooting session :P

He likes to eat fruits. Apple, pear, rambutan, watermelon, mango, durian, guava etc etc.. Out of all these, ripe mango is his favourite fruit.

He enjoy eating all sorts of cakes, buns & kuih as well. He enjoys eating Char Siew Pao :)

He enjoys eating snacks and tit bits. Frankly speaking, he eats everything we eat, except preserved food and hot and spicy food :) But lately he is sort of used to eating spicy food already.

This huge cushion is one of his favourite rest place. He is playing with the cheezel (rolling it around) before eating it..

Soft toys.... My doggy likes to play with soft toys as well as those rubber toys with squeaking sounds when pressed. I have posted a post on his soft toys earlier on.

This is one of the early photo of my doggy. He is 3 months plus by then. Very small and light. Cute and adorable as well. On the first day when we brought him back home, we were not used to his presence. As he is so small and like to run around our legs. We sort of "accidentally" kicked him for few times.. :P Poor puppy.. The next day, my hubby went to buy a collar with a ringing bell attached to it, so that we knew where he was and avoid kicking him accidentally.
